The Story Timeline Order of Wizarding World Video Games
Wizarding World is a franchise of multiple different types of media. Among these types of media, there are video games. My blog is a blog focused on video games, and for this reason, this article will focus on the video games of the Wizarding World franchise universe.
Considering the astonishing success of the Harry Potter books and movies, which are set in the Wizarding World universe, it should come as no surprise that many games in this article will be Harry Potter games. However, it is relevant to note that, for example, the game Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery carries the Harry Potter name while the game's storyline is mostly set in Hogwarts and doesn't feature the character Harry Potter. With the exception of this game, most of the other Harry Potter games in this list feature Harry Potter and are either set during the time period of the Harry Potter books or at an approximate time.
What is the Wizarding World?
Wizarding World is the fictional universe in which the Harry Potter series and Fantastic Beasts series are set. In the Wizarding World universe, fans can find locations, characters and elements from the Harry Potter books and movies, as well as the Fantastic Beasts books and movies. For this reason, it is reasonable to say that games inspired by Harry Potter books and movies are games set in the Wizarding World universe. Likewise, games inspired by the Fantastic Beasts books and movies are games set in the Wizarding World universe.
What Are Wizarding World Video Games Like?
Wizarding World video games can be very different between each other. Most of the video games inspired by Harry Potter books and movies, which usually have the Harry Potter name, such as, for example, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, can be considered action-adventure games. These games usually feature puzzles, adventures, combat and a main story to be followed. Lego Harry Potter games are also action-adventure games, featuring a storyline to be followed, combat and platforming sections, as well as collecting different items.
Hogwarts Legacy is an open world game set in the Wizarding World universe, some centuries before the events that appear in the Harry Potter books, movies and video games. Considering that this is an open world game, this is an ideal game for players and Harry Potter fans looking to adventure in Hogwarts and in the Wizarding World universe.
Fantastic Beasts: Cases From the Wizarding World is a hidden object video game. For this reason, this is a great game for players who enjoy detective games and finding missing things. The gameplay of this game can be quite different to the gameplay of games like Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Lego Creator: Harry Potter and Lego Creater: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, are sandbox games that allow players to use creativity in the environment of Hogwarts. These games do not have a storyline to be followed, and instead feature a sandbox gameplay. These games are a great choice for Harry Potter fans and players who want to create things in the Wizarding World universe.
Is There an Order to Play the Wizarding World Video Games?
Among the Wizarding World video games, many games are inspired by the Harry Potter books and movies, and playing these games, particularly the Harry Potter games, in story order is quite suggested to have the most comprehensive story experience possible, because the events of one game may be related to the events of a previous game. Not only that, considering that many of these games are inspired by books, sometimes it may be assumed that the player has some knowledge about the Wizarding World in order to be able to understand some of the backstory, names and events.
For the best story experience possible in the Wizarding World video games, it is suggested to play these games in the chronological story order list presented in this article. The list is organized according to the chronological order in which the story events happen in the different Wizarding World video games.
The Story Timeline Order of the Wizarding World Video Games
This is the story timeline order of the Wizarding World video games and the Harry Potter video games. In other words, this is the order in which the story events of the different games take place in the Wizarding World universe. This is the suggested order in which to play these games to have the most comprehensive story experience in the Wizarding World video games. This is very different from the chronological order of release date of these games.
Hogwarts Legacy
Fantastic Beasts: Cases From the Wizarding World
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery
Book of Potions
Book of Spells
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Lego Creator: Harry Potter
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Lego Creator: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2
Lego Harry Potter: Years 5-7
The story events of Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery are set before the story events of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. For this reason, it is also set before all of the other Harry Potter video games that take place during Harry Potter's studies in Hogwarts.
In the case of the games Book of Potions and Book of Spells, it is not entirely clear exactly when these games are set. On the other hand, there is no clear indication that these games are set at the same time of the Harry Potter video games. There is also no clear indication that these games may be set before or after the Harry Potter video games. Due to these reasons, and considering that I have seen no clear evidence of a connection between Book of Potions, Book of Spells and the Harry Potter video games, I believe that these games can be played before most of the Harry Potter games, story-wise. For this reason, I decided to place these two games, Book of Potions and Book of Spells, just before Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
The Lego Creator games have no storyline, but they are set at the time period of certain Harry Potter books, more precisely, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. For this reason, they are related to other Harry Poter video games, time-wise, and most precisely, the games based on these same books. Even though these Lego Creator games have no storyline of their own, due to their setting, I find it reasonable to place these games just after the games which tell the main story of the time during when they are set.
The games Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and Lego Harry Potter: Years 5-7 are a retelling of the story events of the years to which they refer. To be more precise, Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 is a retelling of the events of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Lego Harry Potter 5-7 is a retelling of the story events of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2. Even though these two Lego games are a retelling of Harry Potter's adventures, they should not be considered to be exactly the same experience as playing the other Harry Potter games. Indeed, Lego games, while staying true to the stories which inspired them, often feature creative narratives that feature their source material in new, creative ways. For this reason, it is suggested to play the Lego Harry Potter games as much as it is suggested to play the other Harry Potter games in this list.
When Is Hogwarts Legacy Set?
The video game Hogwarts Legacy takes place in the late 1800s. For this reason, it is set many decades before the story events of the video game Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and of the other video games which directly feature the character Harry Potter, such as Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and so forth.
