The Best Myth Units of Age of Mythology
Age of Mythology is a well-known real-time strategy (RTS) video game, praised for its unique setting. Age of Mythology (2002) was developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios. Unlike other RTS games that either take place in historical settings or in entirely fictional or sci-fi settings, Age of Mythology blends historical setting with mythical setting, with a unique take on the real-time strategy sub-genre. Age of Mythology is praised for its unique atmosphere and unique units.
The myth unit is quite important in Age of Mythology. Although difficult to obtain, these units are usually quite powerful and can often turn the tide of battle in the game. They also provide unique gameplay elements, as each myth unit in Age of Mythology has a different ability. Although the titan is technically a myth unit in Age of Mythology, in this article I will not include titans in the list as they would necessarily be the best myth units. In this article, I decided not to include myth units that are titans or that are spawned by Age of Mythology god powers. Age of Mythology players, as well as beginners and new players may wonder which are the best myth units of Age of Mythology.
The best myth units of Age of Mythology are kraken, automaton, mountain giant, cyclops, colossus, phoenix, battle boar, war salamander, behemoth and valkyrie.
10 - Kraken
The kraken, which appears with some frequency during the Greek part of the Age of Mythology base game main campaign, is a useful myth unit during ship battles in Age of Mythology, due to their unique ability of taking down one enemy ship with a single attack.
9 - Automaton
The automaton, one of the few, if not the only robotic unit in Age of Mythology, is a very strategic myth unit if it is used in groups. While the automaton on their own is not one of the strongest myth units, their unique ability to repair other automaton means that a group of automatons can be a formidable raiding party, as they can constantly heal themselves after each battle.
8 - Mountain Giant
The mountain giant is a strong myth unit, quite useful before the late game, and is a very useful myth unit for siege. Due to the special ability of mountain giants, they can deal large amounts of damage to buildings. A small amount of mountain giant units can deal a lot of damage to an enemy base.
7 - Cyclops
The cyclops is a strong myth unit, which appears with quite some frequency during the Greek part of the Age of Mythology main campaign, most often on the enemy side, unfortunately. The cyclops is a strong myth unit which is useful either in defeating enemy units or buildings. In my perspective, the cyclops is quite useful for taking down enemy buildings, especially during the early game, considering that the cyclops is one of the early myth units. I positioned the cyclocs slightly better than the mountain giant in my list, even though they are similar, mostly because the cyclops is available earlier in the game, which can be quite strategic, and also because the special ability of the cyclops is able to defeat one enemy unit (sometimes two) with a single attack, similar to the special ability of the kraken on ship battles.
6 - Colossus
The colossus is a strong late myth unit. While the colossus can be quite expensive, compared to other myth units, this unit features a strong attack and is not easy to be defeated. The colossus is a useful addition to any army, either for a siege force or for a regular raiding army. Although the colossus is able to consume gold mines to recover health points, I wouldn't recommend it, as gold mines are not always available in abundance in the game.
5 - Phoenix
The phoenix is a very strategic unit in Age of Mythology as it is one of the few myth units that are able to respawn on their own. When defeated, the phoenix of Age of Mythology leaves an egg that when hatched gives spawn to another pheonix. The tricky part is that the egg must not be destroyed before this period of time. If a large enemy army is present, then the phoenix will probably not be able to respawn, but in many other cases, it is able to respawn, and for this reason the phoenix is one of the best myth units of Age of Mythology.
4 - Battle Boar
The battle boar of Age of Mythology is a myth unit that is quite strong on their own. However, the battle boar excels when fighting alongside many other ally units, as this myth unit has the unique ability of inspiring nearby units to deal more damage, much like the special ability of Arkantos, the hero of the Age of Mythology base game main campaign. For this reason, the battle boar is an excellent choice for a large army attack on the enemy base.
3 - War Salamander
The war salamander is a quite useful myth unit in the sense that it is one of the few units in the game available to travel in both land and water. The war salamander is not only versatile in this regard, as it is also an excellent choice for any sieging army or for raiding armies, as the war salamander is useful for taking down enemy buildings.
2 - Behemoth
The behmoth is one of the most useful myth units in Age of Mythology as it is not only strong on their own, being a valuable addition to any army and also strong on their own, but they also have the unique ability of regenerating their health points. In this sense, behemoths do not require healing and can be used throughout the game.
1 - Valkyrie
Despite being a game with mythical units, there are not a lot of units available that can heal in Age of Mythology. Especially if you are playing the base Age of Mythology, depending on the settings of the skirmish or campaign, you will usually face a lack of healers. One of the few units capable of healing in the base Age of Mythology game, the Valkyrie is a myth unit which can be quite useful due to their healing abilities.
Are There Other Best Myth Units in Age of Mythology?
While there are many possibilities for the best myth units of Age of Mythology, I decided my choices based on how useful some myth units can be in different scenarios, such as the valkyrie that is able to heal other units, or the phoenix that is able to respawn. However, different players will employ strategies with different myth units, and for this reason, different players may find that they consider some myth units to be the most useful in the game, even if they are not on this list, and this is because there are many different strategies that can be used in a RTS game such as Age of Mythology, and these different strategies highlight the unique abilities of each myth unit in the game.
