Does Dead Space Feature Co-Op?
Dead Space is a franchise of survival horror video games. In Dead Space video games, players assume the role of a survivor in a zombie apocalypse amid space stations and spaceships. Dead Space video games have been praised for their engaging gameplay, immersive sci-fi environments, atmosphere and storyline. The first Dead Space video game, Dead Space (2008), was developed by EA Redwood Shores (later Visceral Games) and published by Electronic Arts. While many horror video games are played in single player, there are horror video games which can be played in co-op, or cooperative game modes. Cooperative video games, or co-op video games, are video games in which the player is able to play together with another player, such as a friend, and progress through the video game with the help of this player. For this reason, cooperative video games are often enjoyed by friends and players who enjoy playing together. Considering that there are multiple Dead Space video games, and that Dead Space video games are story-rich and story-driven experiences, some players wonder which of the Dead Space video games can be played in co-op, or, in other words, which of these video games feature cooperative gameplay.
Some Dead Space games feature co-op, such as Dead Space 3 (2013) and Dead Space: Extraction. Most of the other Dead video games do not feature co-op. Dead Space: Ignition features multiplayer, but not traditional co-op.

Co-Op in Dead Space Video Games
Most of the Dead Space video games are single player video games, such as Dead Space (2008), Dead Space 2 (2011), among others. Indeed, most Dead Space video games are single player survival horror video games, such as many of the survival horror video games of the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s. However, some Dead Space video games feature co-op gameplay, such as Dead Space 3 (2013) and Dead Space: Extraction. It is interesting to note how the cooperative gameplay of these video games adds to the overall experience of the video games in the Dead Space franchise.
Dead Space video games are horror video games, and as such, it is expected that the experience will be the most scary when these video games are played in single player, because playing these video games alone adds to the experience of being alone and isolated during a zombie outbreak, such as seen in other survival horror video games which feature apocalypse situations, such as Dino Crisis and Resident Evil. At the same time, horror video games can also be played with friends, such as seen with the popularity of horror video games such as Dead by Daylight, and also by the surge in co-op horror video games during the early 2020s.
The Co-Op Experience of Dead Space 3 (2013)
Dead Space 3 (2013), features the traditional and classic gameplay also seen in previous Dead Space video games: third-person shooter action gameplay, sci-fi environments, missions, necromorph enemies and a variety of weapons and upgrades. Players who have played either Dead Space (2008) or Dead Space 2 (2011) will quickly recognize Dead Space 3 (2013) for its familiar gameplay and video game feel. While both single player and co-op gameplay experiences of Dead Space 3 (2013) will be recognizable to fans of the series, some fans may prefer playing Dead Spce 3 (2013) in single player for an experience more similar to the single player experience of the previous video games. When Dead Space 3 (2013) is played in single player, the character that would be used by the other player in co-op stays much farther most of the time than in co-op gameplay, and thus most of the single player experience of Dead Space 3 (2013) can be very similar to the gameplay of Dead Space (2008) and Dead Space (2011). If Dead Space 3 (2013) is played in co-op, then the character used by the other played will be closer most of the time, and playing Dead Space 3 (2013) will be an experience more similar to Resident Evil 5 (2009).
The campaign of Dead Space 3 (2013) can be played in online co-op, with a convenient drop in and drop out system. While the campaign of Dead Space 3 (2013) can be played in online co-op, it can also be played in single player. Dead Space 3 (2013) features an online co-op gameplay, not a local co-op with splitscreen gameplay. Most of the important aspects are individual, such as various items, and story progress, which means that players can easily play in single player and switch to co-op and vice-versa while keeping their progress in the video game. Moreover, as the player progresses, chapters of the story are unlocked, and players can go back to play specific chapters with a friend. While most important aspects are separated, players are also able to help each other by sharing items between the characters during gameplay, which adds to the co-op experience.
The Co-Op Experience of Dead Space: Extraction
Dead Space: Extraction, like Dead Space 3 (2013), can be played in either single player or in co-op. Unlike Dead Space 3 (2013), which is a third-person shooter horror video game, Dead Space: Extraction is a first-person rail shooter horror video game, and thus, most of the time, the main character, or main characters, are not seen during gameplay. Instead, during most of the gameplay, players aim on screen in order to use their weapons against enemies in the video game, such as in other rail shooter video games. However, while Dead Space: Extraction can be described as a rail shooter video game, it also features branching paths, areas of player-controlled camera, and some other characteristics that blend the differences between a rail shooter video game and a first-person shooter video game.
Considering that Dead Space: Extraction is a rail shooter video game, if this video game is played in co-op with another player, then one important difference on gameplay is that instead of the existence of one aim on screen during gameplay, there will be two aims, one controlled by each player. In this sense, when playing Dead Space: Extraction in co-op, players can coordinate to target different enemies, especially in situations in which there are multiple enemies attacking the main characters at the same time. Players are also able to target the same target, especially if it is a tougher and more powerful enemy, in order to quickly deal more damage than if the video game was being played in single player. In this co-op rail shooter video game, it is possible for players to divide and coordinate different tasks, such as completing puzzle and fighting enemies. Like in Dead Space 3 (2013), in Dead Space: Extraction, a second player is able to conveniently drop in at any time during gameplay.
